Love of Her Life

Gladys met her husband Joe during one of her many adventures to the Catskills with friends. She enjoyed the various social activities offered, mingling and talking with all the different groups of people. Often, she would end up being the center of attention.
One weekend, Joe and his friends decided to go to the Catskills. While there, he saw Gladys. Watching her he became mesmerized. He definitely wanted to meet her, to talk with her but he was also very shy. He had an idea… He decided to get her attention by “accidentally” spilling his drink on her. This worked. Not exactly the way he intended, but he was persistent and eventually won her heart. They eventually got married and were fortunate to spend another 60 years together.

Family

Gladys is survived by two children, Janna and Mark Nachamkin. She regarded Janna’s boyfriend, Joseph Corsino as her second son, and she cared deeply for and looked upon Janna’s longtime friend, Robin Pickus, as her second daughter.

She loved being called “tante”. She adored and cherished her many nieces and nephews. Louise and Steve Grabell, their children, Scott, Ilyse and George Buchanan, their sons, Ethan and Aidan, Evan and Noel Grabell, their daughters, Bella, Anna, Mia, and Laila. Pamela and Jeffrey Buder, their son Andrew, Vicki and Matthew Gold, their daughters Rebecca and Lissy, Stephanie Ressler-Hochstat and Michael, their children, Samantha and Joshua. Bruce and Ellen Ressler, their sons Matthew and Michael, Jonathan Ressler, Debra and Leon Black, their children, Benjamin, Joshua, Alex and Victoria, Richard and Allison Ressler, their children, Samantha, Jillian, Andrew, and Rebecca, Antony Ressler and Jami Gertz, their sons, Oliver, Nicholas and Theo.

Education

Gladys attended City College in New York after high school; she left to start work but went back to college when her children were older. She graduated from Queens College with her BS in English/Teaching. She went on to complete her MS in Reading and English from Hofstra University. English was a subject in which she was enormously passionate. Until her last days if something was said incorrectly, she would gently correct but always included an explanation. After all she was a teacher. Often, she would say “English is probably the hardest language to learn, there are so many grammatical rules”. She wrote many a poem for family birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s day, etc. If ever she heard, that a paper, a report, a note, a card, or anything needed to be penned, she was thrilled to offer her encouragement and guidance.

Activities

Gladys’ greatest joy was her family. She loved them deeply and would do anything to make them happy. She loved books and was a voracious reader. Her favorite book was “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran. She loved the works of Shakespeare and would often quote passages. She also enjoyed reading mysteries and would scour the NY Times bestseller list every Sunday, making lists of books she would then read. She was a huge supporter of the Library system and served on the local Board when she lived in NY.

Gladys loved playing bridge. She loved the strategy, recall, and of course the socializing. After moving to Florida, she learned canasta, playing every Wednesday with friends she had known since grammar school. Friday night, well this meant going out to dinner with friends and family while Saturday nights were reserved for playing bridge with her husband and other couples.

“A word I want to see written on my grave: I am alive like you, and I am standing beside you. Close your eyes and look around, you will see me in front of you”.
